A TEENAGER was last night in a critical condition in hospital after she was thrown out of a car by the impact of a serious crash in the Amman Valley.
The 16-year-old girl, from Swansea, was a passenger in a silver Renault Clio that crashed in Gwaun-cae-Gurwen.
The impact threw them out of the bus and they were last night in a critical condition at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, after suffering serious head injuries.
A second 16-year-old girl who was also hurled out of the car was last night in a stable condition after sustaining back injuries.
The 17-year-old male driver, also from Swansea, was taken to hospital with head injuries but has since been released.
A 17-year-old male passenger escaped without injury. Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened on Graig Road at 11.45pm last Friday. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
This latest incident is another in a long line of accidents on the A474 running out of Ammanford. Four teenagers were killed in Pontamman in 2005, and two men were killed less than two miles from the latest crash in 2008.
Although speed has not been linked to the accident as a cause, community leaders have urged drivers to take more care on the road.
Councillor Kevin Madge said: “We’ve had six deaths on this road in the past couple of years and nobody wants another one.

Councillor Kevin Madge said: “We’ve had six deaths on this road in the past couple of years and nobody wants another one.
“But people need to take more care on this particular road because it has some nasty bends, especially heading up the Waun Hill.”
Gwaun-cae-Gurwen Councillor Lynda Williams added: “There have been a number of accidents on the hill itself over the years. It’s a dangerous road with lots of bends so drivers do need to be careful.”
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact South Wales Police on 101.”
A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Two fire appliances attended a road traffic collision involving a motor vehicle with four occupants at Graig Road, Garnant, Ammanford. Two female occupants were ejected from the vehicle in the impact.”
