High-level talks between Ukraine and the United States have commenced in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, aiming to explore avenues for ending the ongoing war with Russia. The Ukrainian delegation, led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, includes key officials such as Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Defense Advisor Pavlo Palisa. Representing the United States are Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Central to Ukraine’s agenda is the proposal of a limited ceasefire, specifically targeting the cessation of hostilities in the Black Sea region and halting long-range missile strikes. This initiative also encompasses the exchange of prisoners, reflecting Ukraine’s commitment to de-escalation and paving the way for direct negotiations with Russia.

Secretary Rubio has underscored the necessity for Ukraine to consider territorial concessions as part of any peace agreement. He emphasized that such compromises are essential to prevent further suffering and to move towards a sustainable resolution.

The backdrop to these discussions includes recent tensions between Kyiv and Washington. A notable incident occurred during President Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington, where a heated exchange with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance led to the suspension of U.S. military aid and intelligence support to Ukraine.
