Michael Jordan, renowned NBA legend and co-owner of 23XI Racing, has made headlines with his recent involvement in a legal dispute with NASCAR. In October 2024, 23XI Racing, alongside Front Row Motorsports, filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and its CEO, Jim France, alleging monopolistic practices that stifle competition within the sport. The lawsuit claims that NASCAR and the France family have monopolized the sport through acquisitions of premier racetracks, purchasing competing series, restricting team participation in non-NASCAR events, and mandating purchases from NASCAR-selected suppliers.
In response, NASCAR filed a countersuit accusing 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports of forming an “illegal cartel” to pressure the organization during charter agreement negotiations. The lawsuit claims that the teams engaged in media campaigns, interfered with broadcast agreements, and threatened to boycott NASCAR events.
Jordan has publicly defended his longtime business partner and 23XI Racing co-owner, Curtis Polk, who was specifically named in NASCAR’s countersuit. Jordan stated that attacking Polk is akin to attacking him, emphasizing their close professional relationship.
As the legal battle continues, a trial is scheduled for December 2025. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the structure and governance of NASCAR, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the sport.
