President Donald Trump has intensified his campaign against major U.S. law firms by signing an executive order targeting Jenner & Block, a prominent firm associated with past investigations into his administration. The order revokes security clearances for the firm’s attorneys, mandates a review of its government contracts, and restricts its lawyers’ access to federal buildings. This action specifically highlights attorney Andrew Weissmann, a former lead prosecutor in Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election, who is currently affiliated with Jenner & Block.

Jenner & Block has responded by affirming its commitment to its clients and expressing intent to challenge the executive order through appropriate legal channels. This move is part of a broader pattern, following similar actions against other law firms perceived as adversaries by the Trump administration. Earlier this month, the administration issued an executive order against Perkins Coie, a firm linked to Democratic causes, accusing it of “undermining democratic elections” and engaging in racial discrimination. Additionally, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison faced sanctions, which were later rescinded after the firm agreed to certain concessions, including providing $40 million in free legal services to causes supported by the administration.

Legal experts have raised concerns that these unprecedented actions could have a chilling effect on the legal profession, potentially deterring firms from representing clients opposing the administration and thereby threatening foundational principles of the American legal system. The targeting of Jenner & Block underscores the administration’s ongoing efforts to challenge entities associated with previous investigations into President Trump’s activities.
