Ukrainians Fear Future Under Trump’s Potential Return to Power
As former U.S. President Donald Trump eyes a return to the White House, many Ukrainians are growing increasingly anxious about what his leadership could mean for their country’s ongoing war with Russia. Trump, who has frequently criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine and suggested he could end the war within “24 hours” by forcing negotiations, has sparked fears of a diminished American commitment to Kyiv.
During his presidency, Trump was often criticized for his friendly stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. His impeachment in 2019 was directly tied to allegations that he withheld military aid to Ukraine in exchange for political favors. Now, with reports suggesting he may halt or significantly reduce U.S. support, Ukrainians worry that such a move could tip the war in Russia’s favor.
“The biggest concern is that Trump might push Ukraine into a peace deal on Russia’s terms,” said Kyiv-based political analyst Oleksiy Melnyk. “This would mean losing occupied territories and weakening Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
Ukrainian officials, while careful not to comment directly on U.S. elections, are ramping up diplomatic efforts to secure bipartisan backing in Washington. President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly urged U.S. lawmakers to continue supporting Ukraine’s defense, emphasizing that any reduction in aid could embolden Putin.
As the 2024 U.S. election nears, Ukraine’s fate may hinge on American voters’ choice, with many in Kyiv fearing that Trump’s return could shift the war’s trajectory dramatically.
