On March 26, 2025, a panel of justices from Brazil’s Supreme Court unanimously ruled that former President Jair Bolsonaro must stand trial for his alleged involvement in plotting a coup to remain in power following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.

Bolsonaro, along with 33 others, faces multiple charges, including leading an armed criminal organization and conspiring to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Investigations have uncovered plans involving poisoning or using grenades to carry out these assassinations.

The court also ordered seven of Bolsonaro’s close allies, including former defense and security ministers, to stand trial on charges related to organizing an armed criminal group and attempting to dismantle Brazilian democracy through violent means.

Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the charges are politically motivated and intended to prevent his participation in the 2026 presidential elections. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 12 years, with the possibility of longer terms if additional charges are upheld.

This legal proceeding marks a historic moment in Brazil, as it is the first time a former head of state will be tried for such severe charges, highlighting the nation’s commitment to upholding democratic institutions and the rule of law.
