Donald Trump’s latest White House decision ‘wouldn’t have impressed the Queen’
President Donald Trump’s recent executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” has ignited controversy and drawn criticism from various quarters. The directive, part of Executive Order 14172 titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” also includes reinstating the name “Mount McKinley” for Denali, North America’s highest peak.
This move has raised eyebrows, especially in light of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s previously reported opinions of President Trump. According to biographer Craig Brown, the Queen found Trump to be “very rude” during his tenure. Additionally, reports suggest that she considered some of his remarks “ignorant and hurtful,” particularly concerning her sister, Princess Margaret.
The renaming initiative has faced opposition from various sectors. Environmental organizations, such as The Nature Conservancy, have expressed concerns about the implications of altering established geographical names. The tourism industry in Alaska has also opposed the change, committing to continue using the name Denali.
Critics argue that such unilateral decisions may strain international relations and disrupt longstanding cultural and historical ties. The late Queen’s purported disapproval of President Trump’s demeanor suggests that she might have viewed this latest action as another instance of imprudence.
As debates continue, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact both domestic sentiments and international perceptions of the United States.
