Putin Calls for Removal of Ukrainian Leadership, Proposes UN Interim Authority
March 28, 2025 – Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for the removal of Ukraine’s current leadership, proposing that a United Nations (UN) interim authority take control of the country. The demand, made in a televised address, signals a new escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Putin accused Ukrainian leaders of prolonging the war and claimed that an internationally supervised transition would bring stability to the region. “The current regime in Kyiv has proven incapable of securing peace. A neutral, internationally managed authority under the UN would be the best solution,” he stated.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly rejected the proposal, calling it an attempt to dismantle Ukraine’s sovereignty. “This is nothing but a strategy to install a puppet administration and erase our independence,” Zelensky said in a statement.
Western leaders also condemned Putin’s remarks. The U.S. State Department labeled the demand as “a blatant violation of international law,” while European Union officials reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s elected government. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called the proposal “unacceptable,” warning that any forced political change would further destabilize the region.
Putin’s announcement comes amid ongoing military tensions, with heavy fighting reported in eastern Ukraine. Analysts suggest the demand could be an effort to pressure Ukraine into negotiations on Moscow’s terms. However, with Kyiv and its allies firmly rejecting the idea, the likelihood of such a transition remains uncertain.
