Pensioners Lament Non-Implementation of N32,000 Hike

Retired civil servants across the country have expressed frustration over the non-implementation of the N32,000 pension increment, months after it was approved. Many pensioners lament that despite government promises, they are yet to receive the expected increase, leaving them struggling with the rising cost of living.

Speaking to journalists, some retirees described their current financial situation as unbearable, with many unable to afford basic necessities such as food, healthcare, and housing. “The government announced this increase, and we were hopeful that it would bring some relief. However, we are yet to see any change in our monthly pensions,” said John Adeyemi, a retired teacher.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has also expressed concern over the delay, urging the government to act swiftly. “Our members have served the nation diligently, and they deserve to enjoy their retirement with dignity. The delay in implementing the N32,000 increase is unfair and must be addressed immediately,” said a spokesperson for the union.

Meanwhile, government officials have assured pensioners that the increment will be implemented soon, citing administrative and budgetary challenges as reasons for the delay. However, pensioners remain skeptical, demanding a clear timeline for when they will receive the increased payments.

With inflation worsening the economic hardship, pensioners are calling on authorities to prioritize their welfare. Many say they will continue to protest until the government fulfills its promise, emphasizing that their survival depends on it.
