In a scathing critique, former Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has taken aim at McLaren’s race-day decisions, accusing the team of adopting a strategy that appears more focused on avoiding success than achieving it.

Speaking after the latest Grand Prix, Villeneuve didn’t mince words when assessing McLaren’s performance, particularly their calls from the pit wall. “It’s as if they’re trying not to win,” he told reporters. “You don’t bring that kind of pace and talent to a race just to throw it away with conservative or confused strategy.”

The remarks come in the wake of several questionable decisions during recent races, including delayed pit stops and conservative tire choices that have seemingly cost Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri potential podium finishes.

McLaren, who showed strong form in qualifying, have struggled to convert speed into consistent race results, leaving fans and analysts frustrated. Villeneuve, known for his outspoken nature, emphasized that the team risks wasting its potential. “You can’t afford to be indecisive in this sport. If you want to win, you have to act like it.”

McLaren has yet to respond publicly to Villeneuve’s comments. However, the pressure is mounting as expectations for results grow alongside the evident potential of the team’s car and drivers.

With the season heating up, all eyes will be on McLaren to see if they can adjust their tactics and silence the critics.
