On April 5, 2025, thousands of protesters gathered in Washington, D.C., as part of nationwide demonstrations opposing President Donald Trump and his policies. The protests addressed various issues, including recent tariffs, immigration stances, education reforms, and significant federal workforce reductions initiated by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Demonstrators also expressed support for international causes, notably advocating for an end to the conflict in Gaza and showing solidarity with Palestine. The rally in Washington was among approximately 1,200 held across the United States, with organizers anticipating over 20,000 attendees in the capital.

In addition to policy grievances, protesters voiced concerns over the administration’s handling of student activism related to Palestine. The recent arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student activist and green card holder, has intensified criticism. Khalil is currently detained and facing deportation under federal laws targeting non-citizens deemed threats to U.S. foreign policy. He asserts that his advocacy for Palestinians and criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza are being misrepresented as affiliations with Hamas. Khalil accuses Columbia University of cooperating with federal authorities in suppressing student movements supporting Palestine.
