At least 33 people have lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, due to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The disaster has left dozens injured and homes destroyed, with many major roads submerged and power and water outages reported across the city.
Deputy Prime Minister Jacquemain Shabani has announced the establishment of a crisis management unit to oversee evacuations and deploy emergency teams. The government is working to mitigate the damage and provide support to those affected.
The flooding has severely disrupted the city’s infrastructure, including N’djili International Airport, which has prompted the deployment of emergency ferry services. The Ministry of Transport is working to restore normal operations.
Meteorologists are forecasting continued heavy rainfall, raising concerns for the 17 million people living in the area. The DRC’s rainy season, which runs from November to May, poses a significant threat to the region.
Emergency services are on the ground, working to rescue those stranded and provide aid to those affected. The international community is urged to provide support to help alleviate the suffering of those impacted by this devastating disaster ².
