Yuki Tsunoda crashes in Saudi Arabian GP session as immediate health update issued

RB driver Yuki Tsunoda was involved in a dramatic crash during the final qualifying session (Q3) for the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading to a red flag and halting the session with just over two minutes remaining.

Tsunoda lost control of his car at the exit of Turn 5, causing it to go airborne before crashing into the barriers. Despite the severity of the incident, Tsunoda was able to walk away unaided and appeared uninjured. However, due to the significant impact, he was taken for precautionary medical checks.

The crash prompted race control to issue a red flag, stopping the session to allow for the safe removal of debris and to ensure Tsunoda’s wellbeing. This decision sparked controversy, particularly from Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, who criticized the FIA for what he termed a “gross error.” Alonso argued that a double yellow flag would have sufficed, allowing drivers who had already passed the incident to complete their laps.

The red flag disrupted several drivers’ final flying laps, affecting their qualifying positions. McLaren capitalized on the situation, securing a front-row lockout with Lando Norris taking pole position.

Tsunoda’s crash adds to a challenging season for the RB team, who are still seeking their first points of the campaign. Despite the setback, Tsunoda is expected to start the race, pending final medical clearance.
