BREAKING: Pope Francis Has Died at Age 88

VATICAN CITY – In a shocking development, the Vatican has confirmed the death of Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. He was 88.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Americas when he was elected in March 2013. His papacy was marked by a focus on humility, inclusivity, and reform within the Church, as well as a strong emphasis on social justice, climate change, and outreach to the marginalized.

News of his passing was announced early Monday by the Holy See Press Office, stating that the Holy Father died peacefully in his residence at the Vatican. The cause of death has not been officially released, though Pope Francis had faced several health challenges in recent years, including surgery and respiratory issues.

The Catholic world and global leaders have begun to react with tributes and condolences pouring in. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, said in a statement, “Pope Francis led the Church with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the Gospel.”

As per Vatican protocol, the College of Cardinals will soon convene to begin the process of selecting a new pope in a conclave. Funeral arrangements are expected to follow traditional papal rites, with a public viewing at St. Peter’s Basilica and a funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

Flags have been lowered at half-mast around the Vatican, as millions around the world mourn the passing of a transformative and deeply influential spiritual leader.
