Vatican City — April 20, 2025

In a deeply emotional and historic moment, Pope Francis delivered what is expected to be his final Easter address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, drawing tens of thousands of faithful pilgrims from around the world.

Now 88 years old and battling increasingly severe health issues, the Pontiff spoke with a soft yet resolute voice, reflecting on themes of hope, resurrection, and the enduring message of peace. “As I draw nearer to the house of the Father, I urge you all to continue in love, humility, and service,” he said, pausing often for breath.

This final Urbi et Orbi (“To the City and the World”) blessing held a special weight, as Vatican officials have quietly confirmed that the Holy Father is in the final chapter of his earthly journey. Many in the crowd were moved to tears as he offered prayers for war-torn regions, the poor, migrants, and young people facing uncertain futures.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, became the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope in 2013. His papacy has been marked by efforts to bring reform to the Catholic Church, emphasize mercy over judgment, and engage with modern social issues.

As the bells of St. Peter’s rang out in solemn triumph, the Pope’s words lingered: “Christ is risen, and so must our compassion rise with Him.”

The Vatican has not officially announced any plans regarding succession, but preparations for the eventual conclave are reportedly underway.

For the Catholic faithful, this Easter will be remembered not just as a celebration of resurrection, but as a farewell to a shepherd who guided them through some of the Church’s most transformative years.
