Ferrari has officially announced a delay in the planned upgrade for its 2025 Formula 1 car, the SF-25, signaling a strategic pivot as the team balances current season performance with preparations for the significant regulatory changes set for 2026.
Team Principal Fred Vasseur emphasized the importance of early-season performance in determining the team’s development trajectory. He stated, “If we have to create something, we cannot react after June, for example,” highlighting the necessity of making swift decisions based on the car’s competitiveness in the initial races.
Despite these extensive modifications, pre-season testing revealed challenges with the car’s balance and handling. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc reported difficulties, with Hamilton expressing concerns about the car’s unpredictable behavior on the track.
In light of these issues, Ferrari has decided to postpone the initial upgrade package for the SF-25, originally scheduled for early in the season. This decision allows the team to focus on resolving current performance concerns and to allocate resources effectively between the ongoing season and the development of the 2026 car, known internally as Project 678.
As the 2025 season progresses, Ferrari’s approach underscores the delicate balance between striving for immediate success and preparing for future competitiveness under new regulations. The team’s performance in the opening races will be crucial in shaping its development strategy moving forward.
