As the Los Angeles Lakers face elimination, trailing 3-1 in their first-round playoff series, calls are growing louder for head coach Darvin Ham to lean more heavily on veteran defensive specialist Jarred Vanderbilt. The 25-year-old forward, known for his elite perimeter defense and energy off the bench, has seen limited minutes since returning from injury but could be the key to slowing down the opposition’s top scorers.

Vanderbilt, who missed a significant portion of the season due to a foot injury, has gradually been reintegrated into the lineup. However, with the Lakers struggling defensively—especially against perimeter attacks—analysts and fans alike are questioning why one of their best defenders isn’t seeing more court time.

“With the season on the line, you’ve got to play your best defenders,” said one league scout. “Vanderbilt’s length and tenacity can shift momentum, especially against a high-powered offense.”

The Lakers, led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, have been inconsistent on defense in this series, often letting games slip away in key stretches. Vanderbilt’s defensive acumen, particularly his ability to guard multiple positions, could provide a much-needed boost.

Whether the coaching staff will adjust the rotation in time to force a Game 6 remains to be seen, but with their backs against the wall, every decision now carries season-defining weight.
