James Tedesco’s recent surge in form has reignited selection debates ahead of the upcoming State of Origin series, placing mounting pressure on New South Wale coach Michael Maguire—and potentially complicating decisions for Queensland counterpart Billy Slater and Maroons selector Darren Lockyer. With Tedesco delivering standout performances for the Sydney Roosters, speculation is growing that Maroons fullback Reece Walsh could face a serious challenge from the veteran Blues captain.

Tedesco, long a cornerstone of the Blues’ Origin lineup, had faced criticism in recent seasons, with many suggesting the torch had passed to younger stars. However, his recent displays have proven otherwise, with line breaks, try assists, and his trademark support play returning in full force. His form could force NSW selectors, including coach Maguire and advisor Laurie Daley, to reaffirm their faith in the 31-year-old.

Laurie Daley, a former Origin coach and current selector, now finds himself in a tough position. The emergence of Dylan Edwards and the continued rise of other contenders had made Tedesco’s grip on the No.1 jersey appear tenuous. But the Roosters skipper has turned the tide with his leadership and dynamic play, making him hard to overlook.

As Origin I looms, Daley and Maguire face a crucial call: stick with the proven experience of Tedesco or opt for fresh legs. Either way, the fullback decision is now one of the hottest talking points in the lead-up to the series
