Alleged N80bn Theft: EFCC Takes Fresh Action on Ex-NNPC Chiefs

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its investigation into the alleged N80 billion theft involving former top executives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This fresh move marks a significant development in the long-standing case that has attracted nationwide attention due to the magnitude of the funds allegedly misappropriated.

According to EFCC sources, the renewed action includes the re-invitation of several ex-NNPC chiefs for questioning, fresh forensic audits of financial records, and a wider probe into transactions spanning multiple subsidiaries of the corporation. The anti-graft agency is reportedly working with international partners to trace financial trails that may extend beyond Nigerian borders.

The N80 billion in question is alleged to have been siphoned through fraudulent contracts, inflated procurement deals, and unauthorized payments during the tenure of the former officials. While no formal charges have been filed yet, the EFCC says it is committed to ensuring that all individuals found culpable will face prosecution in accordance with the law.

Speaking on the development, a senior EFCC official who requested anonymity stated, “This case remains a high priority for the Commission. We are revisiting it with stronger tools and renewed determination to recover public funds and hold accountable those who abused their office.”

The investigation had initially stalled due to a lack of evidence and cooperation from certain stakeholders, but recent changes in leadership at the EFCC have breathed new life into the case. Civil society groups and anti-corruption advocates have lauded the Commission’s renewed commitment, urging transparency and swift justice.

This development comes amid President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s pledge to strengthen the fight against corruption in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, historically plagued by systemic mismanagement and fraud. The EFCC has promised to keep the public informed as the case progresse
