Liam Lawson has been stripped of his points finish in the 2025 Miami Grand Prix Sprint race following a post-race penalty for causing a collision with Fernando Alonso. The incident occurred on lap 14 when Lawson, driving for Racing Bulls, clipped the rear of Alonso’s Aston Martin at Turn 12, sending the two-time world champion into a spin and into the wall, forcing his retirement from the race.
After reviewing the incident, race stewards handed Lawson a five-second time penalty, dropping him from eighth to 13th place and out of the points. Additionally, he received one penalty point on his super licence, bringing his total to six within the 12-month period.
The Miami Sprint was marked by chaotic weather conditions, including heavy rain that delayed the start by 25 minutes. Lando Norris secured victory for McLaren, with teammate Oscar Piastri finishing second and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton completing the podium.
Lawson’s penalty was one of several that reshaped the final standings. Alex Albon and Oliver Bearman also received time penalties for infractions under safety car conditions and an unsafe pit release, respectively.
This setback adds to a challenging season for Lawson, who was recently demoted from Red Bull’s main team after just two races and returned to Racing Bulls.
