Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has declared his readiness to account for his stewardship, emphasizing transparency and accountability in his leadership. Reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings as an Almajiri pupil to leading Nigeria’s foremost oil company, Kyari expressed profound gratitude for the opportunities afforded him by Presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Ahmed Tinubu .
Under Kyari’s leadership, NNPCL has achieved significant milestones, including the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which have resumed operations at 70% and 60% capacities, respectively . These developments have bolstered Nigeria’s refining capacity and reduced reliance on imported petroleum products. Additionally, Kyari’s tenure has been marked by increased domestic natural gas consumption and a boost in oil production to 1.8 million barrels per day .
Despite facing criticism over issues such as fuel subsidy management and allegations of importing substandard products , Kyari has maintained a commitment to transparency, instituting monthly financial and operational reports to enhance accountability within NNPCL . President Tinubu has lauded Kyari as a “shining example” of dedication and professionalism, commending his transformative impact on Nigeria’s energy sector .
As Kyari marks his 60th birthday, he reaffirms his dedication to serving the nation with integrity, seeking forgiveness from those he may have inadvertently wronged and expressing a renewed commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
