Dundee debut as he opens up on deadline day transfer after ‘tough’ London spell
On the day of the deadline, Fraser called off his contract at Charlton because he wanted to return to Scotland to be with his family.
Scott Fraser is aware that returning home will please his family and enable him to resume his career as a top player at Dundee.
The playmaker makes his debut for the Dark Blues in tomorrow’s Dens Park match against Aberdeen. The 29-year-old’s young family had been struggling for a few years in London, so on deadline night, he ended his contract at Charlton. The new boy from Dundee said, “I feel like it’s been the most talked about thing over the last two years.”
“I have not concealed it. It’s been difficult ever since my significant other told me that she was tired of London. We used to play there on Saturdays and Tuesdays, so I was often away. I might therefore spend two or three days a week at home and four or five days elsewhere. Consequently, it became challenging when that sort of happened.
“Then we spoke about maybe two weeks up here, two weeks they come down. But things like that didn’t work out.
I realised nothing was immediate from the sport, therefore I stopped appreciating the football aspect of it. Therefore, this has greatly benefited my family, football, and me.”
Fraser believes that he hasn’t truly loved playing football at Charlton for the past two years. “A while ago, if I’m being honest,” he said. It was probably fun the first time I visited Charlton.
“In walks Ben Garner. Ben Garner signed with me in the summer after I signed in January, and I think I had four or five months of really good times with him. When we signed up for Charlton in January, my girlfriend was expecting.
“And because our family was nearby, even the first day or four months went well. As I mentioned before, London is undoubtedly a different world from what we’re used to up here when we’re not happy off the pitch.
Fraser made it known that he intended to return to Tayside, despite the interest of Oxford United and Bolton in signing him from Charlton. When he became a free agent, he received offers from Australia and throughout Europe as well, but he was keen to play for Tony Docherty.
“I think I’ve chosen the right group of people to come and work with every day,” he said. In my opinion, the manager and his coaching staff come across as sincere, decent football players and people in general.
When I first spoke with the manager two or three months ago, that was our first topic of conversation. He was totally in line with the idea that it was important to have the family settled here.
“And then me personally for football, I think he’ll suit me in terms of how he wants the team to play. Attacking football and getting me on the ball and things.”
