In recent discussions within the boxing community, concerns have been raised about the current state of Mexican boxing icon, Canelo Álvarez. Notably, José Benavidez Sr., father and trainer of super middleweight contender David Benavidez, has expressed the belief that Álvarez’s career has been on a decline since his 2022 loss to Dmitry Bivol. Benavidez Sr. described Álvarez as “worn out” and suggested that the Mexican superstar has struggled to regain his previous form following that defeat.

This sentiment is echoed by former super middleweight champion George Groves, who observed changes in Álvarez’s fighting style, indicating a possible decline. Groves noted a reduction in Álvarez’s head movement and an overall alteration in his approach within the ring.

Adding to the narrative, Álvarez’s recent business decisions have come under scrutiny. A highly anticipated bout between Álvarez and social media personality-turned-boxer Jake Paul was abruptly canceled. The fight, initially scheduled for May 3 in Las Vegas, was called off after Álvarez signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season, opting to fight in Saudi Arabia instead. This move led Jake Paul to criticize Álvarez publicly, referring to him as an “owned slave” and questioning his commitment to the sport.

These developments have fueled debates among boxing enthusiasts and analysts regarding Álvarez’s future in the sport. While some believe that his recent performances and decisions indicate a decline, others argue that a champion of his caliber can adapt and overcome challenges. As Álvarez prepares for his upcoming fights under the new contract, the boxing world will be watching closely to see if he can defy the critics and reaffirm his status as one of the sport’s elite.
