Tartan army fans “hurt” in a horrific crash in Germany.
Following a collision on a road near Weeze Airport, close to Dusseldorf, on Thursday night, emergency personnel, including four ambulances, hurried to the scene.
Five Scotland supporters are said to have been hurt, two of them critically, in a horrific head-on collision outside a German airport.
Four ambulances and other emergency personnel raced to the site on Thursday night following a collision on a route adjacent to Weeze Airport, around 70 kilometres outside of Düsseldorf. As far as The Record is aware, two of the five fans who were hurt are apparently in a bad condition.
Images from the site show many personnel tending to casualties on the grass beside the carriageway and on the road. According to a source who spoke with the Record, the supporters drove off after renting a car at the airport after arriving from Edinburgh for the Euros.
However, they barely made it out of the transport hub before being involved in a severe head-on collision with a Mercedes.
It is acknowledged that the collision occurred on the incorrect side of the street.
Pictures taken at the scene depict a saltire and bags being removed from the wreckage.
On the incorrect side of the road, a black and grey Citroen, thought to be the rented vehicle, collides with the Mercedes.
“They arrived in Weeze with Ryanair from Edinburgh at 11 p.m.,” an insider informed the Record. They drove off, forgetting that you drive on the right in Germany, after picking up their rental car immediately at the airport in Weeze. They packed a tonne of bags.
“They just travelled a few hundred metres to the airport before they collided head-on with an approaching Mercedes. The five football fans required immediate medical attention at the scene of the incident due to their injuries, some of which were severe, before they could be sent to different hospitals.
“Numerous rescue teams were on duty until 2 a.m. this morning; the two vehicles were totally damaged and had to be rescued.”
“Serious traffic accident on the airport ring – Shortly after midnight, a serious traffic accident occurred on the airport ring in which two vehicles collided head-on,” a local fire department representative wrote on Instagram.
“Two of the six injured individuals required serious medical attention from the emergency services. We hope for a quick and full recovery for everyone impacted.”
First Minister John Swinney conveyed a sincere message of support while expressing his sorrow at the incident.
“I hope everyone involved is safe and well. Very concerned to read this news,” he tweeted. Considering everyone who is impacted.”
The Record has reached out to German police for a response.
Scotland will play Germany in Munich this evening in the opening Euro 2024 match.
