The seventh season of Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” delves into the high-octane world of Formula 1, capturing pivotal moments from the 2024 season. While fans might anticipate an in-depth exploration of Red Bull Racing’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, the series offers a more restrained portrayal, likely due to legal constraints surrounding recent controversies.

Early in 2024, Horner faced allegations of inappropriate behavior from a female employee, leading to an internal investigation by Red Bull GmbH, which ultimately exonerated him. The series touches upon this episode, showcasing the tension within the paddock as purported WhatsApp messages from Horner were leaked to team principals and media outlets. Horner reflects on the situation, stating, “It was obviously premeditated to cause me the maximum amount of distraction and maximum amount of aggravation.”

However, the depth of coverage on this matter is limited. Legal considerations appear to have influenced the narrative, with Red Bull’s Director of Communications and Social Media, Paul Smith, noting, “There’s so much that he can’t answer. We are in the middle of it, so for legal reasons we can’t talk about it.”

Beyond Horner’s personal challenges, the season captures other significant events, such as Lewis Hamilton’s high-profile move to Ferrari and the ensuing dynamics within the sport. The series also highlights the escalating tensions between Horner and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. In a candid moment, Horner refers to Brown as a “prick,” reflecting the strained relationships amidst the competitive environment.

While “Drive to Survive” continues to provide unparalleled behind-the-scenes access to Formula 1, the constraints in fully addressing the controversies surrounding Horner may leave some viewers yearning for a more comprehensive account. Nevertheless, the series effectively portrays the intense pressures and intricate politics inherent in the world of elite motorsport.
