Celtic’s goalkeeper issue could be solved by Premier League free agent

Published

The hope among Celtic supporters is that this summer will bring quality additions to help Brendan Rodgers begin his defence of the Scottish Premiership championship and boost the team’s reputation in Europe.

Celtic has struggled to leave its stamp in the Champions League during the past three seasons. Although leading Scotland has been fantastic, the supporters are itching to return to the early 2000s, when defeating teams like Liverpool was practically a given.

The glaring vacancy that Joe Hart left behind is the one major position that Rodgers needs to fill. The Celtic crowd will truly mourn the retiring hero, not only for his heroics in between the Parkhead sticks but also for his special relationship with them.

Although there have been numerous rumours about goalkeepers, nobody is truly sure who Brendan Rodgers has in mind to take that position. But Euro 2024 may hold the key to the solution.

Marek Rodak is a 22-cap custodian for Slovakia on the international scene. Rodak, who graduated from the Fulham academy, had successful loan stints with Rotherham United, Accrington Stanley, and Welling United.

Mike McEntegart, the former Welling custodian, was replaced by Rodak. Although he did not like that a young player had taken over, McEntegart had nothing but great regard for the 23-year-old.

“It’s the size and frame of him when you first meet him,” McEntegart remarked. But you could tell he was going to be a great custodian by the way he walked.

Rodak truly made a name for himself in the 2019–20 Premier League season amid the London club’s bid for promotion.

That season, Rodak dethroned Marcus Bettinelli as Fulham’s top player, and the Craven Cottage team’s campaign for promotion is claimed to have picked up steam at that point. [Sky Sports]

Rodak had 14 clean sheets in 33 games, which helped Fulham advance to the Championship play-off final and the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Brentford in extra time.

And that’s when the Slovakian’s situation completely turned bad. After just one season in the top tier, Rodak was demoted, losing both his Premier League status and his starting spot in the first squad to Alphonse Areola, who was brought in on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Once again, Fulham emerged victorious in the following season, and Rodak was rewarded with a starting position in the English second division.

After spending £8 million on German custodian Bernd Leno in 2022, Rodak was once again benched by Fulham and has spent the last two seasons there. [Sky Sports]

As Martin Dubravka of Newcastle’s backup, Rodak is a member of Slovakia’s Euro 2024 roster. Despite this, he did play the entire 90 minutes in Slovakia’s 4-0 victory over San Marino last week, and in the team’s 1-1 draw with Norway in March, he was outstanding. [Fotmob]

Rodak is now searching for a new team and may be an

Given that Rodgers needs to add players to his forward line, the striker position is expected to be a hot topic of discussion.

Despite having an incredible loan period at Parkhead in the latter half of the previous season, Adam Idah, a Republic of Ireland international, has acknowledged he is unsure of his future [Football Scotland].

In the event that Celtic is unable to secure his services, Rodgers has a well-known option that he may consider using to inject some variety into the closing third.

Mark Wilson reacts to floated Celtic transfer theory involving experienced goalkeeper

There have been many of choices discussed in relation to the current Scottish Premiership winners as the Celtic custodian quest continues.

Martin Dubravka, the custodian for Newcastle United, has been connected a lot this window, which has made him talk about his future after Slovakia lost to England last week in their elimination from Euro 2024.

As the Celtic custodian quest continues, numerous options have been considered in relation to the current Scottish Premiership winners.

Newcastle United’s custodian Martin Dubravka has been in contact with a number of people this transfer window, which has forced him to discuss his future after Slovakia’s defeat by England last week sealed their elimination from the 2024 European Championship.

It has been revealed that the Bhoys are reportedly chasing about 20 stoppers in total. Fans are getting angrier by the minute, thus a solution is required.

In response to the proposed Celtic custodian idea, Mark Wilson
Numerous options have been suggested as potential solutions to the Celtic custodian crisis, and former Hoops player Mark Wilson has added his own proposal of a potential fit.

The 40-year-old responded to a hypothesis that surfaced on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard regarding the signing of free agency goalie Kasper Schmeichel, a move that would bring the seasoned stopper back together with Brendan Rodgers. At Leicester City, the two worked together for three years.

“I quite like that, that’s quite a sensible suggestion,” he said in his explanation. He’s perhaps pushing it a touch too far at 37. Nevertheless, he’s been an excellent custodian over the years provided he has maintained his physical condition, which you would think he would. Naturally, there is a connection to Brendan Rodgers.

“He possesses both the height and experience that you need in a goalie. It’s fine if he works for you for a year or two if that’s all you get out of him.

I’ll bring it up again: I don’t believe that signing players is always necessary to make money. The performances and awards they assist in delivering should be the ultimate goal. You have to admit, Joe Hart checked all the boxes in that.

“Celtic, of course, did not receive any sell-on from him, but they did receive a spell of prosperity and stability from a keeper who, while not perfect, was almost always there to carry the side over the finish line when it mattered most. If he is a free agent, I don’t think you can do worse than him.

In the unlikely event that it materialised, there would be some familiarity there because Schmeichel has a tonne of experience and has played in Scotland before.

He played 32 games for Anderlecht in all competitions last season, giving up 33 goals and recording eight clean sheets [Transfermarkt].

However, given that he is 37, it would probably only be a temporary arrangement. It is unlikely that Hart would be at Parkhead for more than a year or two, considering he recently retired at that age.

Oh Hyeon-gyu of Celtic is the most wanted person according to KRC Genk as of June 13. Additionally, it was said that he is eager to leave Brendan Rodgers’ team in the summer.

Later on that day, Belgian announced that the 23-year-old and the Jupiler Pro League team had reached a personal terms agreement.

HBVL revealed earlier this week that Genk and Celtic are still in negotiations for Oh Hyeon-gyu.

According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the Belgian team has already made a preliminary offer for the international player from South Korea. They state that Celtic rejected it, but they don’t go into specifics.

According to the source, Genk has “increased the bid” to secure the services of the Celtic striker, indicating that they are not ready to lose up on him. This makes it very evident that they wish to close a deal this summer.

HLN doesn’t discuss Genk’s most recent offer or the amount required to persuade Celtic.

After signing with them in January 2023, the attacker has played in 47 games for a total of over 1,300 minutes. Celtic will have to decide whether to keep him or not.
