Charlton Athletic: Scott Fraser exit mooted as summer transfer window looms

Although they were 16th at the end of the 2023–2024 League One season, Charlton Athletic is a team that is rapidly rising under the direction of driven manager Nathan Jones.

From February 13 until the final match of the season on April 27, when they lost 1-0 to Wycombe Wanderers, the Addicks did not lose a single match.

Jones, who was hired in February, will now try to make the most of the summer transfer window to put together a team that he believes can contend for the playoffs in 2024–2025.

The Valley Outfit will want to capitalise on some of their current crop of players in addition to, as part of the club’s summer squad reshape

Ben Fleming, a FLW Addicks fan commentator, responded to a question on which player Charlton should try to cash in on this summer by saying: “One player to cash in on this summer-Scott Fraser probably comes to mind.”

“He obviously played the most of last season on loan, and I doubt Nathan Jones will see him staying with the team in the future.

“I’m not sure if he thinks the club is where he wants to end up.

“I’m not sure how many years are left on his contract, but I don’t think it’s too many, and considering the amount we paid for him, I think the club would be hesitant to let him go for free. As a result, he could be one that,

Fraser scored nine goals in League One in his first full season with the Addicks in 2022–2023; he had planned to start the season strong.

However, in January, the 29-year-old was transferred on loan to Scottish Premiership team Hearts after failing to contribute a single goal in 16 appearances and nine starts.

In 11 games and four starts during his time with the Edinburgh team, the midfielder only managed one assist and no goals—hardly the kind of play that will persuade Jones to hold onto his player.

Fraser’s contract expires in 2025, therefore the Addicks’ best chance to get rid of the former Ipswich Town player for a high price is during the summer transfer window.

It would make sense for the London team unless Jones, who Fraser hasn’t played under at the Addicks, is ready to give him a new chance at the Valley.

Selling the midfield player might help the Charlton manager raise the money required to turn his club into one that can contend for the play-offs next year.

Charlton Athletic poised to snap up 26-year-old on a free transfer

Reporter Pete O’Rourke on X claims that Charlton Athletic is about to sign Cambridge United custodian Will Mannion on a free transfer.
When the goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the month, Charlton Athletic is anticipated to get nothing for him. As they aim for promotion under Nathan Jones, they are getting ready for another season in League One.

The 26-year-old Mannion’s contract is set to expire in late June. The U’s have extended it, but he has not signed it, therefore it looks more and more probable that he will be leaving for a new challenge this summer.

According to journalist O’Rourke’s most recent report on his circumstances on X, the Addicks are now “set” to sign him in order to strengthen their goalkeeping staff. At the moment, they have Ashley Maynard-Brewer and Harry Isted as their alternatives for the sticks, but Jones wants to make some adjustments.

Mannion might have been considered by Charlton Athletic as a contender for their top slot.

He has been with Cambridge United, a team in the third division, since 2021. Under former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United boss Garry Monk, he assisted the team in staying up last season.

Before being enticed away by Hull City as a young player in 2016, the former England youth international came up through the AFC Wimbledon programme and was a fixture for the Dons at various levels.

He played in one first-team game for the East Yorkshire club while the Tigers were in the Premier League. In order to gain experience, he also had loan stints with Kidderminster Harriers, Aldershot Town, and Plymouth Argyle away from the MKM Stadium.

When Pafos called, Mannion made the permanent move overseas and lived in Cyprus for a year before returning home.

He was signed by Cambridge United somewhat more than three years ago, and since then, he has played in 41 games for the U’s in addition to a brief stay away from the Abbey Stadium at Havant & Waterlooville in the National League South.

It would be a setback for his current team if Mannion were to leave for Charlton Athletic.

Although they have plenty of time before the new season begins, they will need to locate a new “keeper” during the course of the next few months.
