Doncaster Rovers’ summer transfer strategy is provided by Grant McCann

Grant McCann does not anticipate a very busy summer for Doncaster Rovers in terms of transfers.
The number of new members attracted into the club exceeded ten thousand the previous year. The head of Rovers thinks that this time around the core is more stronger.

The club has 21 contractual senior players after the retained list was made public earlier this week, allowing seven players to depart. In addition, the trio of Harrison Biggins, Luke Molyneux, and Hakeeb Adelakun are reportedly contemplating fresh offers.

It means only a sprinkling of additions are likely, with McCann keen to avoid carrying a bloated squad. Last season 37 players represented the club in the league, a total the manager says is too high.

“I doubt it will be as hectic as the previous summer. However, we’ll undoubtedly be trying to strengthen the group and team,” McCann stated on the team’s website.

“Obviously, some players are going, and we need to fill those spots. Since January, we have been putting in a lot of work.We have been focusing on goals. For us, their character is really vital, and competence is undoubtedly also quite important. I believe we have the core of a fairly strong group, so there is some work to be done in the summer, but not as much as it was last year.

“We really want to streamline and reduce it a little bit so that there is competition for every post. However, we don’t require the thirty or so players we had here at the end of the season.

“It’s given us an opportunity to trim the group but also keep some of the good young players who we hope to develop.”

With customised training programmes in hand, Rovers players will now embark on their summer vacations with the intention of making a strong return for preseason action under McCann.

This weekend, at Wembley, Crawley and Crewe will meet in the League Two play-off final to complete the reorganisation of League Two for the upcoming season.

The transfer window doesn’t open for another month but planning is underway at Derby County ahead of their return to the Championship.

Grant McCann, the manager of Doncaster Rovers, has already expressed strong opinions against one of Derby County’s most recent targets. Paul Warne faces the small issue of settling the contracts of twelve first-team players, whose terms expire in June, before making any significant investments in the playing group.

Warne calls it the hardest division he’s seen in years and asserts Derby needs quality at every position to stay in the second tier.

Fortunately, Herbie Kane, a midfielder for Barnsley, has been linked to the Rams for a free transfer. After Max Bird left for good, the 25-year-old would bring some serious quality to their engine room at Bristol City.

Kane was highly rated in League One last term, producing an impressive nine goals and five assists in 41 appearances, with his former manager Grant McCann waxing lyrical over him.

McCann is one man who knows Kane very well having spent time together at Doncaster Rovers and Hull City.
