Shops shutdown in Lancashire for illegal trafficking

Following a sting operation where stores all throughout Lancashire were found to be selling vapes to minors, hundreds of illicit devices were seized.

Together with Lancashire Constabulary, Lancashire County Council Trading Standards inspectors tested establishments in Rossendale, Fleetwood, South Ribble, Preston, and Fylde. Eight of the 49 establishments that were examined allowed volunteers between the ages of 13 and 16 to buy alcohol or vapes.

Lancashire Constabulary issued penalty charge notices for the alcohol sales, and Trading Standards will take enforcement action for the vape sales. During the operation, Trading Standards also confiscated more than 590 vapes that did not comply.

Four out of thirteen examined locations offered vapes, four out of 35 checked locations sold booze, and one shop was tested for cigarette sales but did not sell any during the test purchase crackdown that occurred over the Easter weekend.

“We are disappointed that eight businesses chose to sell alcohol and vapes to children, even though we are happy that the vast majority of the tested businesses did not sell to the volunteers,” Trading Standards manager Angela Lomax stated. Establishing a strict ‘Check 25’ policy is the most effective approach for companies to stop selling to minors.
