Man dies in New Year’s Day house fire

Published

On New Year’s Day, a house fire in Kent claimed the life of a man.

At 12:00 GMT on Friday, fire firefighters were dispatched to Gillingham’s Goodall Close in response to reports of a smoke-filled residence.
After dispatching two fire engines, the ground floor was found to be the site of the fire. At the scene, the individual was pronounced deceased.
Paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) and Kent Police were also there. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

In December, Graeme Martin had a heart arrest while participating in a Gillingham parkrun in Great Lines Park.
He was saved by Medway paramedic Chris Treves, an off-duty paramedic, who was running with his dog.
The two met again at a cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training session for parkrun volunteers in Medway, which was organised by South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb).
“I owe Chris and the team a huge thank you for ultimately saving my life,” stated Mr. Martin. Without them, I wouldn’t be here right now.
According to Secamb, Mr. Martin collapsed shortly after the start of the race, separating him from his partner, Lori.

Mr. Treves claimed that he was moving more slowly than usual because his dog, Clara, had been having a “nervous” day.
After a short distance, he saw Mr. Martin laying on the ground with two off-duty nurses and other runners surrounding him.
He continued: “I quickly got onto the ground to check his pulse and breathing.”I then verified with the other bystanders that Graeme was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

While they waited for an ambulance, he began CPR on Chris while surrounding runners dialled 999.
After the parkrun was called off, the organisers found a defibrillator, allowing Mr. Treves to shock Mr. Martin.
Secamb added that after the ambulance arrived, their staff was able to find a pulse, and Mr. Martin was flown to Ashford’s William Harvey Hospital.
Lori, Mr. Martin’s partner, was taken to the hospital by police escort.
She stated: “It was the quickest drive I’ve ever had but I was pleased to be there for Graeme’s arrival.”
Dan and Gary Gower-Smith, the organisers of the Great Lines parkrun, thanked everyone who provided assistance during “a very difficult situation” and praised the emergency services’ “world class” reaction.

The cause of the fire is being looked into.

Gillingham police are looking into a vehicle fire that started, but they are unable to rule out the possibility that the fire was started intentionally or accidentally. The Dorset Police team was alerted to the fire on the road between Milton Abbas and Bourton at about 2:30 pm on Sunday, June 30, and they are now looking for witnesses to the incident.

The event concerned a white Ford van that caught fire in the layby on Fantley Lane, a little distance outside of Silton. Traffic was barred from the road while emergency personnel battled the fire.

The fire department put out the fire and made arrangements for the car to be recovered. An inquiry is in progress to ascertain the origin of the fire.

Officers are now pleading with anyone who knows anything to come forward. “At this time the cause of the fire has not been confirmed and we are unable to say whether it was deliberate or accidental,” North Dorset Police Constable Ed Lewis stated.

“We are in the process of conducting investigations to determine the facts, and I kindly ask anyone who has any information about suspicious activity in the area or dashcam footage to come forwards.”
