Charlton Athletic agree contract deal with Lincoln City

As part of their proactive preparations for Nathan Jones’ first full season at The Valley, Charlton Athletic has confirmed their fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

The Welshman had expressed his intention to wrap up most business before the start of pre-season, and it appears that this is occurring. Josh Edwards, a defender, Luke Berry, and custodian Will Mannion had already joined the Addicks.

Now, center-back Alex Mitchell, who arrived from Championship team Millwall for an undisclosed price, has signed a three-year contract with the team. The Lions defender played League One on loan for Lincoln City during the previous campaign.

As the club confirmed the deal, Jones said: “Alex is someone I’ve known for a while so I’m really pleased to bring him to Charlton. He has gone out on loan and played games which is important for a young lad. He is someone that is an excellent defender and someone that will make us stronger, more competitive and more aggressive.

“He has a lot of room to develop. Having played numerous games, this 22-year-old is far from reaching his potential. He had a tremendous season at Lincoln last year, contributing significantly to their good finish in the second half of the campaign. Working with him is a player I’m very enthusiastic about.”

Although Mitchell came through the Millwall development system, he only made one professional game for the team and is currently not considered to be a part of Neil Harris’ plans, even though the transfer of former Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga has not progressed. In previous years, Mitchell had been on loan at Bromley, Leyton Orient, and St Johnstone.

The defender faced Charlton twice at Lincoln City in the previous season. The Imps drew 1-1 in The Valley in February after defeating the Addicks 3-1 in October.

Mitchell stated, “I’m very happy to get it done early doors,” after signing. Knowing that Charlton was interested made it obvious to me right away. It is a really large club. The last time I visited The Valley, I was in awe of the stadium and played against Charlton. I absolutely look forward to it because I believed the fanbase was the best.

“My conversations with Nathan Jones have gone pretty well. He was quite obvious that he wanted me to feel important and that’s why I came here. I’m excited.

Defender moved from Lincoln City to Cheltenham Town in the summer of 2018.

Gloucestershire Live has learned that Seán Long, the captain of Cheltenham Town, will be leaving the team this summer, ending his six-year tenure at Whaddon Road.

The 29-year-old, who came to the Robins from Lincoln City in the summer of 2018, has been wearing the armband for the last two seasons.

Since then, he has made 215 appearances across all competitions, tallying two top finishes in the team’s 137-year existence while also scoring eight goals and helping the team win League Two.

born in Dublin Long scored both goals in the 2-1 triumph against Port Vale in October of last year, and he started 45 of Cheltenham’s 46 League One games.

Compared to other players, he has made the most League One appearances for the team. Liam Sercombe, an accomplished midfielder who will also be leaving Cheltenham this summer, comes in second on that list. The players have declined Cheltenham’s offer of new contracts.

The dependable and very competitive Long has played at right back, right wing-back, right center-back, left center-back, and even in the middle of midfield throughout his time with the team.

Long and Sercombe will undoubtedly leave, but Luke Southwood, the custodian, Will Ferry, the left wing-back and George Lloyd, the forward, are all set to leave this summer.

Preseason away match between Cheltenham Town and Jerry Gill’s Bath City is part of the agreement to sign Jordan Thomas from the National League South team in January.

In addition, the Robins will play a friendly at Bishop’s Cleeve. Additional warm-up games will be announced in the next few days.
