ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A head-on crash has claimed the life of one person and has shut down one Eastern Carolina highway.

The crash happened just before 11:00 a.m. near the intersection of Catherine Lake Road and Fowler Manning Road in Onslow County. That is next to the Albert Ellis Airport.

Highway Patrol First Sgt. John Edwards confirms that one person died in the crash. He said one of the two vehicles was making a left turn and was hit head-on.

One of the vehicles was hauling a riding lawnmower, which ended up underneath a vehicle. Both vehicles had considerable front-end damage.

Officials say patience while behind the wheel is key to making it from one destination to the other safely.

“Patience while you’re in motion, keep distance between you and the car in front of you, patience when you’re good to turn from a direct line, wait a few seconds and make sure everything is clear, and limit distractions in your vehicle from a radio to a phone,” Sgt. Edwards said.

The road is expected to reopen around 2:00 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.
