Before Sheffield Wednesday’s Saturday loss to Luton Town, Danny Rohl made an extremely intriguing transfer statement.
Sheffield Wednesday’s defeat in their most recent Championship match was extremely unfortunate.
The officiating calls throughout the game were questioned, but the Owls eventually lost 2-1 despite leading 1-0 against Luton Town.
Di’Shon Bernard was sent for what appeared to be a handball; as a result, Luton won the game.
Sheffield Wednesday, who play this weekend at Hillsborough against league leaders West Brom, are without a win since their opening-day victory over Plymouth Argyle.
Additionally, manager Danny Rohl has an eye on the long future at the team, even though supporters are primarily concerned with the here and now.
The German stated prior to the Luton match that he had a plan for the next two transfer windows.
Even though the next window is a short ways off, Rohl stated that even now I have clear idea in my mind what we have to do in the next two windows.”
Sheffield Wednesday transfer business in the 2025 summer window
Wednesday had a successful summer transfer window by all measures.
The Owls got off to a quick start, adding eight new players before departing on their preseason tour of Germany and Austria.
The summer transfer window was concluded with the addition of Shea Charles on loan from Southampton.
Sheffield Wednesday don’t appear to be as good as they were in the second part of the previous season, despite what appeared to be a very strong window.
The side still has gaps in it. However, Rohl is aware that the project being worked on at S6 will take some time to complete; it will likely take at least the next two transfer windows to start showing meaningful results.
What Sheffield Wednesday need to do in the next two transfer windows
What Rohl has planned for the next two windows remains a mystery. But it feels certain that he’ll have an eye on his players out of contract in 2025.
Before the Luton game, Rohl even said:
“I had yesterday a talk with Kevin [Beadell, head of recruitment], now we will speak with the chairman about this.
“Which players we want to extend, which players we can extend, which player wants to extend, and then of course you will have some players, maybe where you speak in detail in January, not now, to see how’s the process.”
Some of those thought to be out of contract in 2025 are long-term duo Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer, along with names like Michael Smith and Pierce Charles among others.
And a main focus for Rohl should be, and likely will be, on replacing those out of contract.
Bannan is a focal point in this side and replacing him is surely high in Rohl’s thinking now, whilst replacing his and Palmer’s experience will also be key
At the same time, Wednesday have an ageing squad, and so replacing some of the older players with younger ones should also be a key area of focus.
And that feels like the tip of the iceberg for Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl where the next two windows are conceded.
There’s James Beadle leaving when his loan finished, and Shea Charles also leaving, a lack of centre-backs, and right now a lack of firepower.
But replacing those leaving next summer certainly feels like a priority for Rohl looking forward.
