Cardwell in, McCart out: The dream start to Rotherham’s summer transfer window

Published

on

There is going to be plenty of work for the Millers to do this summer…

With their recent departure, the Millers have ended a miserable campaign that saw them place far lower on the Championship table.

Consequently, they have already made some significant steps following their relegation and are already getting ready for life back in League One.

At least 16 players will be leaving New York Stadium this summer, according to the club’s released and retained list, which was posted earlier this week.

This means that the club will need to rebuild the team that Steve Evans has at his disposal, which may involve both new and exiting players.

Considering the difficulty they will have in securing an instant promotion back to the Championship the following season, they will undoubtedly need to take care of that matter.

In light of this, we’ve looked at one arrival and one exit that would provide Rotherham United with an ideal start to the summer transfer window right here.

With Charlie Wyke departing Rotherham following the end of his loan spell, and Josh Kayode another who could leave after being made available for transfer, a new centre forward could be on the agenda for the Millers.

Recent reports have claimed that they are among a number of clubs to have shown an interest in Southend United’s Harry Cardwell ahead of the summer transfer window.

Despite a raft of financial issues and subsequent points deductions, the 27-year-old’s form in front of goal was enough to take the Shrimpers to within touching distance of the National League play-offs this season.

Given how they have struggled for goals this campaign, that ability to find the net would make him an important additions to Evans’ side. With a number of other League One and League Two clubs being credited with an interest in his services as well, it could be a welcome coup for Rotherham to get this deal done, and strengthen themselves ahead of some of their potential promotion rivals.

It appears likely that more players will leave Rotherham this summer in addition to those who were previously let go when their contracts or loans expired.

Jamie McCart is one of them; when the transfer window opens, the defender will be available for an instantaneous transfer.

After moving from St Johnstone to the Millers in the summer of 2022, the 26-year-old has made 13 appearances for the team in all competitions. He had a spell with Leyton Orient in the second half of the previous season, but he has spent the most of this one on loan at Barnsley.

That does seem to hint that he is a player they could afford to lose this summer, as he is a little lower on the The New York Stadium’s hierarchy. Considering that he is about to enter the last year of his contract, this might be Rotherham’s only opportunity to profit from him. In order to collect money that can be used to add some much-needed reinforcements to the squad for the remainder of the summer, it could make sense for them to act swiftly if that is what they intend to do.

Rotherham United sign experienced midfielder

Liam Kelly, an experienced midfielder, has joined Rotherham United on a two-year contract, becoming their sixth summer addition. Kelly comes from Coventry City, where his employment was terminated.

Kelly, 34, has a wealth of Sky Bet Championship experience. He joined Coventry City in 2017 and helped the team win League One and advance to the Championship in 2019–20. In the second tier, he has over 50 appearances and has held the position of captain.

Kelly started his playing career at MK Dons and later moved to Kilmarnock, where he played more than 100 games. During his career, he also had spells at Leyton Orient, Oldham Athletic, and Bristol City.

“The club got in contact, and the manager laid out his ambitions for next season and how he wanted me to play a part,” Kelly stated, expressing his excitement about joining Rotherham. It was obvious after meeting with the management and viewing the players they were adding. The club is eager to return to the Championship, and I’m excited for the upcoming campaign.”

Kelly said, “I’ve played in these divisions for a number of years now,” in reference to his influence off the pitch. Although I’ve had a terrific time at Coventry, I’m excited to meet the new guys and support the squad as they attempt to return to the Championship.”

Kelly loves being in a leadership position; he has been captain of every club he has played for. “I believe I’ve served as captain for every club I’ve attended. I’m proud of it and I enjoy doing it. I’m hoping to contribute to the team’s success on and off the pitch by helping the guys around me.”

Kelly said, “League One is a difficult league with some big teams coming down from the Championship,” as she considered the difficulty of the competition. Teams are investing financial resources and bringing in skilled, seasoned players. Although we believe the team has signed well and is getting stronger, it will be difficult. All we have to do is work hard and make this a successful season.”

Kelly is enthusiastic about this new chapter despite having a long career. “I’m eager to get going. I’m excited to start a new chapter, get back on the pitch and win some games after spending a lot of time at Coventry.”

Kelly stressed the value of fitness in her final remarks. I take great satisfaction in being prepared and in shape. I didn’t play as much as I would have liked to last season, in part because other guys were doing so well. However, I maintain my physical fitness and readiness, and I’m eager to play football.”

Kelly said, “Still the same Liam Kelly,” when asked if his approach to the game has changed.

Rotherham United manager sign new talent

Liam Kelly, the newest addition to Rotherham United, is described by manager Steve Evans as a “fantastic professional.”

After the announcement of his seventh new player, the Millers boss noted, “He’s a really good player and a fantastic professional,” in an interview with the Official Site.

When you consider his traits, his uniqueness as a guy, and how well he fits into the locker room, you can see that he is an incredible addition. With so many alternatives available to him, we’ve done a fantastic job capturing his interest.

“People will say he’s thirty-four years old, but the way he plays, he could be fifty-four,” but our fans will genuinely connect with him. And those who witnessed the destruction versus the Millers at Coventry last season Kelly was amazing, pulling at all the stops, and he will deliver many more moments like that.

“Kelly is one of those players who, as a manager of an opposing team, you have to get close to and get around him” after looking at the squad sheet. He simply controls the entire game. He’s basically a really gifted boy who can pass the ball really well, pull people to him, and get us excited when we’re under pressure. He can also put a ball on a toadstool from my needs are met at sixty yards. He is aware of some competition, though.

“I think Mark Robins said, ‘I don’t think you’ll get him,’ but I met with Liam a few times, and we had a chance to move forward early this morning (Friday), and the Chairman said, ‘let’s do it.'”

This boy sounds like a cross between Mighty Mouse and Superman, to put it politely. For my part, I can’t wait to see him in a Millers shirt on the pitch.

Rotherham United sign ex-Sunderland, Wigan, Preston and The Owls man

a former player for Sunderland, has joined Rotherham United, who were recently demoted.

After helping the Owls earn promotion from League One during his productive loan stint at Hillsborough, James signed a permanent contract with Wednesday last summer. However, in the 2023–24 season, the 30-year-old defender appeared in just eight Championship games, and in the previous calendar year, he made just one league appearance off the bench.

After being released by the Owls at the end of the season, the left-back—who can also play in midfield—was acquired by Rotherham United, an EFL team, following the Millers’ 2023–24 relegation from the Championship to League One. The New York Stadium has inked the player to a two-year contract.

The 30-year-old, a former player for Wigan Athletic, Blackpool, Preston North End, and Manchester United, joined Sunderland in the 2018–19 campaign and played in 27 league games for Jack Ross as the Black Cats were defeated in the League One play-off final at Wembley. After just one season in Wearside, James was then traded to Doncaster Rovers.

James used social media to express his gratitude to Sheffield Wednesday and its supporters for his time at Hillsborough when he left the team. James posted on Instagram, saying, “I just wanted to say how grateful I am to each and every one of you for the support that you’ve given me over the last 2 seasons.”

“My career’s high points will always be the memories I have of winning promotion at Wembley and that incredible comeback against Peterborough. It would be an understatement to say that the two seasons have been very different, but I have had a great time with the club and I hope the manager, his staff, and the boys have nothing but success.
