This morning (September 26), there was a terrible crash on the A2 near its intersection with the M2, resulting in the death of a man. A portion of the road near Rochester was closed in both directions during the morning, causing heavy traffic and protracted delays.

Around 2.40 am, the crash was first reported. “Patrols and Secamb (South East Coast Ambulance Service) attended the scene where the driver, a 29-year-old man, was confirmed deceased,” a spokeswoman for Kent Police stated. His family has been notified.

Approximately 1.5 hours of delays were reported by National Highways along the M2 London-bound at the height of the event, with slow-moving traffic returning to Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester. Road users were advised by Kent Police officers to “consider alternate routes” as the closures were in place and National Highways established dedicated diversions.

At the time, a representative for National Highways stated: “A National Highways area team crew has been on scene to inspect the damaged lamp-posts and the central reservation barrier. The car involved collided with two lamp-post columns, which have been damaged as a result.

“A specialist structural engineer is also at scene assessing the bridge supports which were also struck in the collision.” Around lunchtime, the road was reopened in both directions; however, the coastbound section of the A2 had one lane blocked for a while to facilitate emergency repairs.

Not long after 2.30 pm, all lanes were reopened, and regular traffic patterns quickly ensued. Kent Police detectives are requesting witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage from the area to time of the crash to come forward.
