Sheffield Wednesday player sign contract extension

Published

on

One of Sheffield Wednesday’s out-of-contract players may be getting close to a new contract.

In terms of contracts, Sheffield Wednesday has started the postseason well.

In addition to veteran players Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer, manager Danny Rohl inked a new three-year contract.

However, there have still been some departures: goalie Ben Hamer, a free agent, is set to replace Cameron Dawson, who departed to join Mansfield Town, and goalkeeper Lee Gregory left.

In other news, Di’Shon Bernard’s contract expires in the summer and, while away on international service with Jamaica at Copa America, he will theoretically become a free agent.

Josh Windass, a striker who scored in Sheffield Wednesday’s final three league games of the season and six goals overall in 2023–24, is also without a contract this summer.
According to Sheffield Wednesday’s retained list, Windass received an offer for a new contract at the conclusion of the previous campaign.
However, other Championship teams have expressed interest in the 30-year-old striker, including Derby County, Hull City, Stoke City, and West Brom.

But as of right now, Windass and Sheffield Wednesday are “nearing agreement on new contract,” according to journalist Alex Miller on X.

Miller continues, saying that Birmingham City, the newest team in League One, had “launched an ambitious bid” to recruit Windass on a free transfer.

It’s unknown how long Windass’s new Sheffield Wednesday deal would last. However, Windass disclosed last month on the Official EFL Podcast that he and his representatives were in negotiations with Sheffield Wednesday regarding the next several years of Windass’ career.

That could imply that Windass will agree to a longer-term contract with the team, which would help to prevent another summer of intense contract negotiations.

Additionally, it would provide Rohl with a reliable player to establish himself in the starting lineup and begin developing around; Windass is one of the Championship’s most proficient strikers when healthy.

He demonstrated it in the closing stages of the 2023–2024 season, when his goals once again had a significant impact on the result of what turned out to be an extremely successful campaign.

The Owls would have a very good start to the summer if they can now sign Bernard to new terms as well.

Sheffield Wednesday boss ‘announcement’

Published

on

Sheffield Wednesday may decide not to pursue a permanent signing of Ike Ugbo from Troyes and instead focus on acquiring Sory Kaba from Las Palmas.

After spending the first half of the season on loan at Championship opponent Cardiff City, striker Ugbo signed on loan from French team Troyes. The Canadian international made a significant contribution, scoring seven goals and dishing out one assist in 19 games to help the team win promotion to the second division.

This form was not ignored, though, as journalist Darren Witcoop has revealed that Wednesday may be priced out of a long-term transfer for the Troyes midfielder.

But Wednesday does have a backup plan. Kaba, a striker for Las Palmas who spent the 2022–2023 season at Cardiff, is said to be of interest to Wednesday. Kaba has played in the Championship before.

According to Darren Witcoop, Kaba joined the La Liga team last summer but is free to depart after just one season. Several Championship teams are reportedly interested in signing him.

Callum Maxted, one of our fan pundits for Sheffield Wednesday, thinks his team may be priced out after Ugbo’s impressive loan stint, but he still wants to bring him in permanently this summer.

This implies that they could have to look elsewhere, and Kaba of Las Palmas might be a good substitute.

Callum stated to Football League World that he would choose Ugbo if given the option, but only because he had played. I can’t really comment on Kaba’s skill level because I haven’t really seen him perform.

“Ugbo came to us and we realised he was talented enough, despite what the Cardiff fans had told us.

They differ in terms of sizes and styles, but if we’re seeking to move forward, I believe you should go with someone like Ugbo who is familiar with the club and has that expertise. However, we’ll definitely end up paying more for that arrangement.

“We need to look elsewhere to see if there are any new developments, and in my opinion, Kaba would be the big thing going forward.”

Sory Kaba has proved his worth at Championship level

In January 2023, Kaba joined a Cardiff team that was fighting for promotion from the Championship. Kaba was instrumental in keeping the team from going down.

Despite only joining the Bluebirds on January 31st, the Guinea international featured in 17 games, scoring eight goals, dishing out one assist, and finishing as the team’s top scorer. It was his first experience playing English football.

Had it not been for Reading’s six-point deduction and Kaba’s goals, the Bluebirds would have finished 21st that season and really been relegated. Instead, they would have played in League One in 2023–2024.

Wednesday shouldn’t be deterred by the former FC Midtylland striker’s performance with Las Palmas because he is a strong, robust, and skilled aerial attacker.

Although Kaba has only netted twice in 20 games for the Canary Islands team, La Liga is unquestionably a better league than the Championship, and he has demonstrated his ability as a player in the past.

Wednesday shouldn’t panic if they can’t close a deal for Ugbo; instead, they should target signing Kaba this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday boss reaveals on exciting deal with target player

A player said to be of interest to Sheffield Wednesday has been made available for transfer this summer, according to a French football director.

Before what appears to be a hectic summer of action, The Star reported earlier this month that Wednesday had made contact over Karamoko Dembele’s availability and that he was on the longlist of players they had looked at as possible targets.

Bright attacking player Dembele, 21, made waves in Scotland in 2016 when he made his under-20 team debut for Celtic at the age of 13. The five-foot-six flier, who has since signed with the French club Brest, played on loan in League One with Blackpool last season, when he scored eight goals and provided thirteen assists in 39 league games to launch a bright young career.

Several teams have expressed interest in him since his comeback, including Wednesday. Since then, reports have claimed that Everton, West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Southampton, Leeds United, Derby County, and Middlesbrough have attracted adoring glances.

The attacking midfielder will not be staying with Brest, according to Get French Football News (via L’Équipe), despite the team’s incredible run to third place in Ligue 1 and Champions League qualification. Despite having a contract that expires in2026, the 21-year-old appears to have indicated in an interview with Grégory Lorenzi, the sporting director of Brest, that he will be one of four players leaving the team this summer.

There may be a permanent or loan changeover, according to reports. What steps Wednesday takes in what appears to be an intensely heated battle for his signature is still unknown.

Danny Rohl statement on Sheffield Wednesday third summer signing

Published

on

Following “agreed” personal terms, Sheffield Wednesday hopes to “wrap up” their third summer signing.

In the coming days, Sheffield Wednesday now hopes to “wrap up” their third summer acquisition.

Sheffield Wednesday signed Danny Rohl, Barry Bannan, and Liam Palmer to new contracts earlier in the summer window, thus they have been active.

Max Lowe and Ben Hamer, two free agents, were subsequently signed by them; the former had spent four years with Sheffield United, their rivals.

Lowe joins Hillsborough to compete with Marvin Johnson on the left, and the Owls will now likely acquire a new defender to contend for a spot on the right.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Yan Valery, who collaborated with Rohl while he was at Southampton, had consented to get back in touch with him on Wednesday.

Although the full-back having previously reached a personal agreement, Wednesday still had to contend with fierce competition from around Europe to sign him.

Yan Valery could be a Sheffield Wednesday player by the weekend

After that, it was said that the Yorkshire team and Angers had reached an agreement on a fee, and it currently appears that he will sign with the team later this week.

The Owls’ transfer business is going in the right direction

Although Wednesday was impressed by Pol Valentin’s performance in the second half of the season, he still has weaknesses and could use some competition.

With four assists from the previous season, Valery may be a great asset for the Owls as he attempts to spark his career under Danny Rohl in England.

The 25-year-old is someone the German coach obviously thinks highly of, and given the success of his January additions, it is safe to assume that he will bring in some elite players.

The club’s decision to invest in seasoned players who have previously competed in the Premier League or the Championship is commendable.

Last summer, Wednesday signed a number of unknown players, including Momo Diaby and Juan Delgado, but it turned out that this was a risk that wasn’t worth taking.

Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday’s “can’t seem to agree” on which “new” targets to sign.

There is a debate going on at Sheffield Wednesday about which of two “new targets” to sign.

Ike Ugbo’s loan arrival in January helped Sheffield Wednesday avoid relegation despite the team’s offensive deficiencies that contributed significantly to their relegation struggle the previous season.

With the striker going back to Troyes and Lee Gregory departing on a free transfer, the Owls seem to be starting over from scratch at this point.

Wednesday has already rekindled their interest in Ugbo, Duncan McGuire, and Mika Biereth as they want to bolster their attack.

Troyes is reportedly drawing a lot of interest and could be expensive, but it was recently rumoured that they had already contacted him about a second agreement for Ugbo.

Sheffield Wednesday are ‘pushing’ for a new No.9

Although the club appeared to be fully dedicated to pursuing the Canadian, it now seems that they have their sights set on “two new foreign targets.”

Although the identities of these targets are unknown, it would seem that the club has given up on trying to re-sign Ugbo.

Although Danny Rohl would have been better off investing seven figures on him, he would have been a dependable acquisition.

The Owls must move quickly to acquire a new striker, but Nixon’s statement that the board “can’t agree” on a target is worrisome.

Although we’re not privy to what’s happening behind the scenes, this could point to a disagreement between Dejphon Chansiri and Rohl regarding their transfer company. This summer, especially in the few months after the German’s signature of a new contract, they most definitely cannot afford to have any arguments.

Wednesday needs to lock down a new forward as soon as possible so they can enjoy a full preseason campaign at Hillsborough and be prepared to begin the season in August. Preseason action begins later this month.
