An inquiry into a murder has been prompted by the death of a man who was hospitalised after suffering a severe head injury.
On Saturday, a “targeted attack” on Sheffield’s Staniforth Road left the 23-year-old victim critically hurt, according to South Yorkshire Police.
Police said he was transferred to the hospital, where he passed away on Monday night.

If Labour wins the general election, it has promised to investigate the Battle of Orgreave, a 1984 violent altercation between striking miners and police.
During the most violent battles of the year-long strike on June 18, at the coking plant in Rotherham, more than 100 police officers and picketers were hurt.
Labour has pledged in its election manifesto to “ensure that the truth about the events at Orgreave comes to light through an investigation or inquiry.”
Calls for an investigation have previously been turned down by the Conservative administration; in 2016, former home secretary Amber Rudd stated that such an investigation would not be in the “public interest.”
This week, the BBC was informed by the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, and the Green Party that they backed an

For a considerable amount of time, the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign (OTJC) has demanded an impartial investigation of what it described as the “militarised” police operation at Orgreave and the “false charges” that were subsequently made against the striking miners.
On June 18, 1984, a total of ninety-five men who had been picketing at Orgreave were taken into custody and put on trial for charges of riot and unlawful assembly.
However, claims that South Yorkshire Police had fabricated evidence caused the case against them to fail in court.
OTJC general secretary Kate Flannery expressed her hope that Labour’s pledge would “finally deliver the truth and justice which has been delayed for 40 years.”
In order to guarantee that the complete truth is revealed, she urged activists to “have a voice in the way the investigation is structured and run.”

According to their statement, the Conservatives “had no plans to conduct an inquiry into Orgreave.”
The Liberal Democrats, meanwhile, declared that they “supported calls for an inquiry.”
Reform UK’s spokesman, who was this week campaigning in Barnsley’s former mining districts alongside leader Nigel Farage, stated: “In principle, we support the idea of an inquiry, but it depends to some extent on its frames of reference.”

The Green Party declared that it too thought an investigation into the events at Orgreave was warranted.
“There was evidently excessive use of force by the police, and there are still a lot of unresolved concerns regarding the intentions and strategies of the police as well as the involvement of the Conservative government in one of the bloodiest conflicts in British history,” a spokesman stated.

According to police, a man was assaulted during an attack in Sheffield and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Following complaints of an attack, South Yorkshire Police closed Staniforth Road in Darnall on Saturday night. It is said that a 22-year-old male was brought to a hospital to receive medical attention.

His injuries are believed to be potentially fatal. The victim was stabbed, according to the police at first, but they are now attempting to determine if this was an attack or a stabbing.

Drivers are advised to stay away from the area around the cordon that has been placed along Staniforth Road, where officers are stationed. At the time, the reason for the road closure was cited as a “police incident.”

“We were made aware by the ambulance service today (Saturday, June 8) at 4.36pm to reports of a stabbing on Staniforth Road, in Darnall, Sheffield,” a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said in a statement.

“A male, age 22, reportedly received a stab wound to the skull. His injuries are believed to be life-threatening, and he is currently being taken to the hospital.

“While police officers carry out their duties, Staniforth Road is presently closed. Please stay away from the area and, if you can, find other ways.”
