A WOMAN has become the third to die in just 12 hours after being the victim of a crash involving a police car.
The pensioner was struck by a cop car responding to a 999 call as she travelled along in her mobility scooter in Bedworth, Warwickshire, yesterday.
Officers stopped at the scene to give first aid and she was taken to hospital by air ambulance but later died as a result of her injuries.
It’s the third collision where a woman has died in a crash involving police this week.
At around 11.30pm on Tuesday, off-duty PCSO Holly Burke was killed in a crash after a car being followed by police failed to stop during a 15-minute chase.
The 28-year-old, who had been in the job for 14 months, died on Lordswood Road in the Bearwood area of Birmingham, despite desperate medical efforts.
Unemployed Darren Ogom, 42, of Kings Norton, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence, driving with no insurance and failing to stop for a police officer.
Appearing at Birmingham Maigstrates’ Court today, Ogom spoke only to confirm his name, address, date of birth and nationality in a five-minute hearing.
Wearing a grey t-shirt, he looked at the floor throughout the hearing while flanked by two dock officers.
Ogom, was remanded into custody to appear at the city’s crown court on February 21.
Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson described Ms Burke’s death as “truly tragic”, and said she was “greatly valued” by the force and the communities she served.
The force said the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, who said investigators have been gathering evidence including body-worn and in-car footage.
