Yeovil Town manager Mark Cooper praised his side for their ‘best all-round performance’ in their goalless draw with Altrincham on Saturday.
The sides had drawn their previous three matches, so it was perhaps no surprise to see the sides in stalemate once more.
Four victories and a tie from their first nine games feels like a strong start for them in their first season back in the National League, despite their inability to score goals in front of their home fans.
Cooper stated after the game over the weekend, “I thought we looked really solid.” We seemed aggressive, and I was quite happy with it.
We put on what I believe to be our best overall performance of the season.
“I requested a performance today, and I felt that in the first half, we played well, looked strong, controlled a significant portion of the game, and chose the proper moment to attack.
“I was really pleased, the only thing missing was a little bit of quality when we got one-v-one in the wide areas to create that goal.
“I thought we were really good defensively, we set up a little bit differently. We played a 4-1-4-1, three midfield players.
“We wanted legs, some ability and energy in the middle of the pitch today and I think you could see we looked pretty solid and we won a lot of one-v-one duels in the middle of the pitch.
“As a team we defended really well, but that has to be a minimum for us, that output, that effort. If we’d have played like that the other night, we’d have won the game.
“It’s pretty sobering for the boys that if they do give everything, which I don’t believe we did the other night, if we give everything we can match – I mean Altrincham were in the play-offs last year, I thought we more than matched them today.”
Goalkeeper Ollie Wright was pleased to secure a clean sheet, his second on in the National League in a Yeovil shirt and first at Huish Park following the Glovers’ 1-0 win at Braintree.
He said: “I’m buzzing with the clean sheet, it was much needed. Thought the back four and Dom [Bernard] who come on were brilliant, so yeah it was much needed.
